EAST END
UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Grounded in Our Becoming: Do you ever feel frustrated by your all-too-human inability to see the future? Let's say you've put a lot of work into becoming who you are. You've taken the classes, learned the lessons, done the work. You've recovered from pain or trauma, you've repaired broken relationships, and you've nurtured yourself, your family, and your community. Yet even after all that work, you're still unsure of what's to come. Anything and everything could shift on a dime. You're still a human being, subject to the whims and faults of human existence.

How do we cope with our chronic uncertainty? Throughout this retreat, we will spend time dwelling in the wild and wonderful in-between place of the already and not yet, both as individuals and as a congregation. East End has faced hardships, struggle, joy and growth. As you prepare for this next season of life, ministry, and all that is to come, we will join together in giving thanks for where you've been, and how you've been shaped to meet this coming moment. We'll ground into the soil of our past while tenderly branching out into the gracious expanse of our becoming. As Mordecai proclaimed to Queen Esther, perhaps it was for just such a time as this that you have come into your position. Perhaps you are indeed ready to meet the moment.

Shelby Slowey is an ordained pastor, spiritual director, contemplative community creator, and mom of four rooted in middle Tennessee. She’s passionate about reclaiming the inheritance of our ancient Christian wisdom tradition through contemplative practice. A graduate of Vanderbilt Divinity School, she served in local churches for over 20 years before discerning a call to plant and nurture Open Door Collective, a virtual and in-person contemplative community and spiritual resource organization. Shelby is a trained spiritual director, and finds joy in companioning people on their spiritual journeys. She is a novice gardener and beginner foraging enthusiast, but her true loves are creative writing and finding new ways to practice making art. The Slowey family enjoys hiking the many great trails in Tennessee, stomping in a good creek, and hosting people in their home. More than anything, Shelby strives to be a good neighbor, and to provide hospitality for the heart, mind, and spirit of all whom she encounters. Find her writing over on her Substack, A Person Ponders, at shelbyslowey.substack.com.

Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for our Churchwide Retreat on October 23-25 at beautiful Beersheba Springs Assembly. We are excited to welcome Rev. Shelby Slowey, who will lead spiritual formation sessions for youth and adults while our kids will have special programming of their own. We will still have plenty of all-ages fun and free time as well.
