It was recently announced that due to the Covid Pandemic and visa wait times for international delegates, the United Methodist General Conference, the quadrennial legislative gathering that speaks for the entire denomination, is being postponed for a third time and is now scheduled to meet in 2024. Follwing this announcement a large group of churches who oppose the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons announced they will be forming a new denomination named the Global Methodist Church on May 1st.
Details on how and when these churches will depart the UMC and how this denominational split will impact East End UMC are still unknown, but we are hopeful this split will finally allow the United Methodist Church to end its discriminatory practices against the LGBTQ+ community.
